Building SwapCircle: From Idea to Marketplace App in 10 Weeks
The Brief
SwapCircle came to us with a clear vision: build a peer-to-peer trading marketplace where users could list, browse, and swap items directly with each other — no cash, no middleman. The challenge was building trust and usability into a concept that many people had never tried before. Visit the live app at swapcircle.app.
Week 1–2: Discovery & Architecture
Before writing a single line of code, we spent two weeks in discovery. This is the phase most clients want to skip — and the one that saves the most time later.
What we mapped out:
- Core user journeys: listing an item, browsing, initiating a swap request, accepting/declining
- Trust mechanics: how do you get strangers to swap with confidence?
- Data model: items, users, swap requests, reviews, messaging
- Platform decision: React Native for cross-platform mobile (iOS + Android from one codebase)
By end of week 2, we had a full technical spec and wireframes for every screen.
Week 3–4: Design
SwapCircle needed to feel approachable and community-driven — not corporate. We went with a warm, clean design system:
- Rounded cards and soft shadows to make listings feel tactile
- A green/teal accent palette tied to sustainability and trust
- Profile-first design: every item shows the owner's face, name, and review score
- Clear swap request flow with status indicators (Pending, Accepted, Completed)
We ran two rounds of design review with the client and locked final screens before any code was written.
Week 5–7: Core Development
Heads-down build time across three sprints:
Sprint 1 (Week 5): Auth, user profiles, item listing with photo upload
Sprint 2 (Week 6): Browse and search with category filters, item detail views
Sprint 3 (Week 7): Swap request system — send, accept, decline, cancel
Every sprint ended with a working demo the client could tap through on their phone.
Week 8: Messaging & Reviews
With the core swap flow working, we layered in the trust features:
- In-app messaging between users after a swap is initiated
- Review system — both parties rate each other after a completed swap
- Reputation scores displayed prominently on profiles and listings
Week 9: Testing & Polish
Beta testing with a small group surfaced key improvements: better photo upload UX with crop/rotate, push notifications for swap request updates, refined onboarding flow to surface listings faster, and performance tuning with image lazy loading on the browse feed.
Week 10: Launch
App Store and Google Play submissions went in at the start of week 10. Apple review took 2 days; Google Play was live within hours. Both platforms live by end of week, with 50+ seeded listings and a coordinated social launch.
Results
- Launched on time and on budget
- 200+ signups in the first two weeks
- 4.7-star average on the App Store at launch
- Zero critical bugs post-launch
